The one-month battle, which culminated in a terrible bloodbath and total devastation of the city, was the scene of the worst urban fighting in the Pacific theater, and ended almost three years of Japanese military occupation in the Philippines (1942–1945). JAPANESE OCCUPATION Without having been at the center of military action, Siquijor had not been spared by World War II. Japanese detachments occupied the island. Guerillas engaged in sabotage and the interaction wrought havoc on lives and properties. At this period, Siquijor was briefly governed by Shunzo Suzuki, a Japanese civilian appointed by the Japanese Imperiol Forces until he was assassinated by the guerilla forces led by Iluminado Jumawanin Caipilan, Siquijor in October 1942. Mamor Fukuda took over the control of Siquijor from June 1943 until the Japanese forces abandoned the island when the liberation forces came in 1944. The groom was a short muscular Filipino named Santiago Bonifacio. He was a boatman who rowed people from Taguig, Rizal, to other towns along the Pasig River. The bride, Catalina de Castro, was a mestiza born of a Spanish father and a Filipino-Chinese mother from Zambales. She worked as a maestra, or supervisor, in a cigarette factory in Meisic ("Maintsik"), which today is Manila’s Chinatown. On November 30, 1863, Catalina gave birth to a baby boy in a small wood-and-nipa hut in Tutuban, a swamp-like part of Tondo. The name Tutuban means the place where they make tuba, an alcoholic drink made from coconuts. The proud parents named the boy Andres, after St. Andrew the Apostle, the patron saint of Manila.
